The United States of Disconnection

From Empathy to Extremism—How Narcissistic Abuse is Tearing America Apart and the Way Forward

What if America’s cultural crisis isn’t just political—it’s relational?

In this bold and timely book, psychotherapist Darren Elliott reframes political extremism, social fragmentation, and online toxicity through the lens of narcissistic abuse. Drawing from years of clinical practice and lived experience, Elliott explores how narcissistic dynamics—gaslighting, blame-shifting, emotional immaturity—are playing out on a national scale.

The United States of Disconnection doesn’t pathologize—it contextualizes. This is not about diagnosing politicians. It’s about seeing clearly how personal trauma and cultural dysfunction mirror each other. From MAGA to cancel culture, from church trauma to family estrangement, this book offers a powerful framework for healing our relationships—and our country.

About the Author

Darren Elliott is a registered psychotherapist, educator, and founder of multiple healing platforms, including OnlineTherapyOntario.com, LGBTQtherapy.ca, and CoachingForNarcissism.com. Based in Ontario, Canada, Darren works with individuals, couples, and families around the world through his online practice and community-based programs.

A survivor of narcissistic abuse and someone who grew up in a narcissistic family system, Darren brings deep personal insight and professional clarity to this complex topic. His work blends trauma-informed relational therapy with a passionate belief in our capacity to grow.

Drawing from Gestalt therapy, attachment theory, and the teachings of Ellyn Bader, Terry Real, Tara Brach and more, Darren helps people reclaim connection, accountability, and emotional maturity.

Darren believes narcissism is not evil—it’s emotional immaturity stuck in place—and that recovery begins when we stop demonizing and start humanizing. His writing invites readers into what he calls Love Loops: relational healing rooted in compassion, boundaries, and mutual transformation.

When he's not writing, Darren can be found working with clients online, co-hosting The Friends of Doreen Show with his drag queen alter ego Doreen Devine, or traveling with his chosen family.
